Phillip's 2016 Cairns to Cooktown ride for FNQHF

The ride is done! The bike had a gear change problem between Mareeba and Mt Molloy (fixed by the Cairns Pump&Peddle volunteers) and the body was short of sleep after flying in from Canberra the night before, but everything was ready for the Desailley Range and that climb went quite well. Thanks to all supporters who helped raise $2147.

Raffle Winner: Jan Greensmith! Well, I might not have ridden if not for Jan's (un)timely support so I guess this is a very appropriate result! The Ralph Shiraz transport will be organised via Evan G :-)

Cycling Yogi 2016

I am again riding in the Cairns to Cooktown Cardiac Challenge bicycle ride to raise funds for the FNQ Hospital Foundation. If you would like to sponsor my efforts, visit my official fund raising web site.
All sponsors enter my raffle described below. News: there is now a choice of prize - either wine or a Raspberri Pi (or similar computer).

2015 raffle news: Biannka B. took wine; Ken M. received beer (enroute!).

The 2016 Cycling Yogis team has members Christal and Phil, with Bob temporarily an honorary member in 2016.

The 2016 route has:
  - a range climb first thing in the morning (Kuranda),
  - snacks at Mareeba,
  - annoying head winds (Mareeba to Mt Molley),
  - very cold nights (Mt Carbine & Lakeland),
  - a very challenging range climb at Desailly,
  - BBQ and beer near Lakeland,
  - real cattle grids and also virtual grids,
  - many large fury animals grazing along the way (usually 4 legs).

It is ≈330km from Cairns to Cooktown!

Many bananas, many chocolate muesli bars, sometimes many tyres and tubes are consumed by the 2-legged participants.

Raffle Prize for Sponsors

There is was just one prize. It is a Kellermeister Ralph's Original Shiraz Cabernet :-)
However, since Sophie W has sponsored me (and as she is somewhat underage for wine consumption), the raffle prize is now a choice of the Kellermeister wine or a Raspberri Pi (or equivalent) computer. I'd recommend the Raspberry Pi (for everyone). Oh, and younger sponsors are also welcome to use the wine in negotiations with parents to achieve personal aims.

or...

How the draw is conducted: We use arc4random_uniform(), so familiar to *BSD and OS-X users e.g. see this C++ program which randomly select winners. It all just works.

Q&(possible)A: If anyone sends me a question, I'll append it with an answer (or at least a "response") in the comments section below. Thank you messages are below too.

Noel, Townsville
Hi Noel, Thanks for your support. With luck, neither of us will ever need to use the upgraded facilities!

Mexican Brad... Well it's better you riding the bike than me.
Dear M. Brad, I would like to thank you but I haven't been able to guess who you are. Regarding what is best: please show thyself and we'll be able to check your condition to ride!

Michael Papamichael, Cairns:
Hi M^2, Thanks for the support. I've been doing maintenance on the bike to get it into shape but the effort with the body has been less effective this year. I guess I'm (again) hoping to gain some condition during the ride.

Pete Eccles, Melbourne: Good to see you're riding once again this year. I hope all goes well!
Thanks Peter. I'm thinking of trying to form a new team called "Cycling Electrical Engineers" ... hope to be in touch.

Thanks Lynne.

Sophie W, Canberra Go Phil! Dad wishes he was pedalling right there alongside you (but you might be in slightly better shape ;)
Thanks Sophie. I'm not sure if he really does ever wish for physical activity ... but I share your hope! Now, if you win the raffle, I think we should swap the wine for a Raspberry Pi (well maybe you can taste the wine, with your parents approval, but the pi will be very nutritious in other ways).

Serafina & Peter
Thank you aunt and uncle! This Kellermeister red is quite a classic so good luck in the raffle.

Peter R, Townsville
Thanks Peter.

Ken Mc, Mareeba Would have ridden this year if I wasn't going to NZ at the same time. All the best.
Thanks Ken. It would be nice to get a few new riders for our group! Anyway, if you're lucky again, you'll have a choice of Cardiac Challenging drinks for your next BBQ (I suspect my raffle prizes should not be consumed in large quantities).

Andrew D, Perth Good stuff Phillip
Thanks Andrew. The weather forecast looks like it will be cool so that is welcome (but Mt Carbine with tomorrow's camp site has a 40% chance of rain?).

Liz in Chittering Enjoy the ride and say hello to FNQ for me.
Thanks Liz. Will be seeing some of FNQ quite close up (Mt Carbine at football finals time ...).
